She broke the glass ceiling for portrait sculpture in Canada.

Born to a comfortable middle class Hamiltonian, Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth Bradford new at a young age what she wanted out of life, articulated it to her family and friends and eventually attained it. The professional status she received during and since her lifetime is unsurpassed by any other Canadian woman sculptor then or today. As said in my opening sentence Elizabeth broke the glass ceiling for women sculptors in Canada yet, and surprisingly, to many her name isn't known. let me explain.

Elizabeth was born at a time when women were largely seen as lesser, more expected to be a wife, to bear children, and to be domestic. that was the societal role. And Elizabeth was all that but she also achieved more. She attained a diploma (later recognized as a degree), she was a skilled communicator in prominent circles of some of the most noted people worldwide, and above all else she took upon herself the most challenging discipline of being a portrait artist in the even more challenging field of sculpture. and what is even more incredible in a nation such as Canada where sculpture is not well understood or practiced. What tenacity!
